Scripture Reading: Hebrews 9:1-15.

Memory Verse: John 3:16.

1. Why did the sacrificial law demand the blood of animals? Hebrews 9:19-22 & Leviticus 17:11.
2. Whom did the sacrificial atonement prefigure? Hebrews 9:23-28.
3. Did the blood of animals take away sin? Hebrews 10:1-4.
Note: Blood offerings from lambs, goats, and calves never did take away sin. They merely prefigured the blood of Jesus Christ. The substitutes and the rituals which accompanied them ended at the cross.
4. Did the sacrificial law have a specific day for the atonement? Leviticus 16:29-30.
5. What was that day called? What were the people commanded to do on that day? Leviticus 16:31.
Note: The days specified for sacrifices (meat offerings, drink offerings, blood offerings, etc.) were called holy days and Sabbath days because the law of ordinances demanded rest on those days. The sacrificial Sabbaths were different from the weekly Sabbath which God commanded man to keep in memory of creation. Christ abolished the commandments contained in the law of ordinances, not the Ten Commandments.
6. What exhortation did Paul send to the Colossian Church? Colossians 2:5-7.
7. What type of circumcision did he recommend to them? Colossians 2:10-13.
8. Did he remind them that Christ took away the law of ordinances? Colossians 2:14-15.
9. What advice did he give to them concerning the sacrificial law which was abolished? Colossians 2:16-17.
Note: Paul’s message was to accept the real atonement and leave the substitutes.
